Which Type of Building Should I Choose?

  Barnmster Red Iron
1) I want my Garage to have more of a barn feel. Barnmaster’s Raised Center Aisle roof design is popular for garages because it has that “barn feel”. The 4’ wide wall panels also make it feel more like a modular barn then a garage. You can also do a Raised Center Aisle roof design with a Red Iron building for a “barn feel”. However the metal corrugated siding does give it more of a commercial look.

2) I need my Shop to have very sturdy framing and siding. Each Barnmaster steel wall panel is made up of a 26gauge painted steel exterior, ¾” of CDX plywood in the center with a 26gauge zincalume steel interior. Panels are then connected to 12gauge steel connector columns that connect to 14gauge steel trusses. Needless to say, it would be hard to even dent this wall. These buildings have Red Oxidized Steel frames, which is how they get their name, which are extremely strong, 50KSI, and bolt right down into your foundation. The 26gauge corrugated sheeting that makes the siding and roofing however is thin and can be dented but can also be easily replaced if damaged.

3) My building needs to be well insulated. Vapor Barrier can be sandwiched in between the roofing and purlins which cuts down and can even eliminate condensation or building “sweat”. Traditional insulation can also be added in the roof to achieve better insulation. The R rating for insulating the roof can reach up to an R30. Vapor Barrier as well as Traditional insulation can be added to these buildings to achieve up to an R30. However a new product available is insulated panels that actually replace your sheeting and act as insulation as well as your siding/roofing. Stucco and metal exteriors are available.

4) I want my building to be dust and pest free. Since Barnmaster buildings are made up of 4’wide panels that are spot welded together to make walls, dust and pests can creep their way in if you do not come back in and properly caulk the inside of the building. After all, these are meant to be horse barns, not houses, but they do make a nice hybrid. The corrugated sheeting and roofing used for these buildings actually interlock with each other. This makes for a tight seam that is more dust and pest proof than Barnmaster. The wall sheeting also comes down past the outside of the concrete slab so dust does not blow in.

5) I just need an economical storage building, which one is best? These steel buildings are definitely more economical then going with a traditionally stick built garage or shop. However plywood is used as a core for this painted steel sided building, making the Barnmaster typically less economical than a traditional steel building. Red Iron buildings are very economical structures. Even though steel prices fluctuate, these still tend to be the cheapest route to go. These buildings can be very commercial and plain looking but offer the storage you need for a cheaper price per square foot than Barnmaster.

6) I have a basic background in construction. Can I install my own building? Because these walls and gables come premade from the factory, Barnmaster buildings are fairly simple to figure out if you have any construction background. However, there is not an installation manual other than the engineered barn plans, but if you have been in construction you most likely could install the building yourself. The large steel frames make it difficult to install these buildings without a crew and the proper equipment. It gets even more difficult if you order an especially large/tall building that has several accessories. With both Barnmaster & Red Iron buildings we recommend a professional erect the building, however that decision is ultimately up to you.
