What are some basic horse barn styles that I can choose from?

There are many different styles and sizes of horse barns. Each one depends on the climate of the area, the number of horses, the budget of the owner and the type of operation.

  • Center aisle or breezeway barns - Gable and Raised Center Aisle barns are the most common barn styles. Wash stalls and tack stalls can also be included in this format. This style suits a colder climate as it is not necessary to leave the building to do stall maintenance and feeding. Grooming and health checks can be done easily in this center aisle.
  • Shedrow barn -  These barns have all the stalls in a row or inline with an overhang over the front of the stalls. These are more economical barns since they do not take up as much square footage as a breezeway barn does. Shedrows are most effective in warmer areas since the stall fronts are exposed to the open air and ventilation is abondant. Different size overhangs are available starting from a 2' cantilever overhang ranging up to a 14' posted overhang. "L" or "U" shaped shedrow barns are also available.
  • Double row barn - Especially suitable for warmer climates. This barn has two rows of stalls back to back in the center of the building. The outlying "aisles" can be left open without walls for ventilation.  Different size overhangs are available to protect the stalls from the rain.

For the single horse owner there are many variations of a single stall/run in shed building as well.
